Costa Rica

In early November, Kevin and I had the opportunity to travel down to Costa Rica with our friends, Melissa and Chad. We had all been through a very busy fall, so a nice relaxing trip was just what we all needed. I would be around 15 weeks while on the trip, so I was also coming out of the first trimester fog of pregnancy, which was REALLY nice!

We stayed in a house that had an incredible view and a wonderful couple who took care of us, almost too well. We didn't really do much other than read, swim, sunbathe and eat. Next time, we plan to be a little more adventurous. This trip, I was the crazy one, staying up until 10 pm one night! What you might not realize is that the sun is up like is noon in the US by 6 am, and since there weren't any room darkening curtains, we were all up by then as well. Spending the entire day outside makes you ready for bed around 8:30 pm, which is why everyone was shocked at how late I stayed up...I was finishing a really good book, by the way.

A few memories worth sharing: the airport is open air, which is different from any other airport I've ever been in, and it had the largest fan I've ever seen. Kevin and Chad decided to use the ATM to get Costa Rican cash (colones). They chose the middle amount, which was 20,000 colones. According to the cheat sheet that I had, it was about $16 US. That wasn't going to get us too far! Luckily, where we were, everybody took US currency or credit cards, so we were fine. We saw some really neat birds - parrots, etc. What I wasn't expecting were the insects, which having spent awhile in Belize, I should have known better. The grasshoppers are huge - approx. 6" long and they fly around very erratically at night. They are around during the day, but usually you'd find them sitting somewhere, not flying. At night, it was a whole different story and they didn't seem to be afraid of us! Bats come out in droves at night as well. That was freaky the first few nights, but we seemed to not be bothered by them towards the end of the trip. We would sit in the lounge chairs and watch them fly around, dip down for a drink from the pool and then fly off. They were pretty much everywhere though. Oh, and scorpions like to hide in rolled up towels. A basket of towels was kept by the pool, and we took some to the beach. We found our scorpion the hard way as we were getting out of the car and I saw it walking on a towel between Melissa and me. All four of us jump out, and the guys start looking for it, jumping back every so often just in case, but we couldn't find it. Kevin pulled out the towels and held them up for us to inspect, but we didn't see the thing. After a few more minutes, we saw it hanging on the corner of one of the towels and were able to kill it. I don't know if I would have ridden back in that car without finding the scorpion!

Below are a few pics from our trip.

The view - terrible, isn't it?

The living room. There weren't any back walls on
the house, other than the bedrooms.

View of the back, including the pool

Our bathroom - I refused to take a shower out here
at night since I didn't want any unexpected
guests joining me! That's the tub
in the foreground. We never tried it out.

Our nightly ritual of watching the sunset...
at 5:30 pm

Our very own Moondoggie's. Chad and Kevin spent
a lot of time body surfing and then body boarding.
They plan to buy their own boards next trip.

One of the unexpected guests I mentioned above.
On the pillow is a very large grasshopper.

You can't appreciate it, but this guy is between
5-6" long and has spikes coming off
his back legs.

Dinner on our last night
