Oh, Hail!

Yesterday was quite eventful for us.  We had our first spring storm, which in the Austin area, often means hail.  The kind of hail we were expecting was not what we got!  I was late leaving work and got to the day care right as pea-sized hail starting coming down.  I went into Sarah's room and the assistant director came in and said that the skylights in the room would be fine.  She left and the hail started getting louder.  I looked out a window and saw that the hail was the size of a tennis ball!  It was so loud that the kids were starting to get scared.  All of a sudden, the skylights shattered and hail started falling into the room!  I helped the teacher get the kids out of the classroom and into the hallway, where most of the other classes were by this time.  Sarah was great - she just kept asking lots of questions.  Next, we had to go find Nathan, whose class wasn't in their classroom.  The hail only lasted about 5 minutes, so we were able to go check out our car.  Pictures of my car are below.  It didn't fare as well as we did.  Kevin had to come get us because the kids couldn't ride in the back, although minus the glass, it could have been kind of like a convertible!

Our house seems to be okay, although I'm sure we'll need a new roof.  The roofing companies were already out last night, getting jobs.  One of my co-worker's neighbors was in her car with her kids when the large hail hit and it broke the back window with the kids back there.   Needless to say, they were very scared!  Other than the crazy stories we're hearing about today, everyone is fine and that's the most important.  Think good thoughts about my poor car today - Kevin takes it to get a damage estimate this afternoon!

The front yard about 1 hour after the hail hit

Close up of the hail

Sarah and the hail - one hour later

Front view - not terrible, right?

A bit closer, notice the cracks in the windshield

Not good - none of the back windshields of the cars in the day care lot made it

Notice the hole in the speaker

wow that is some damage on your car! sorry to see this. those hail storms are dangerous and it is incredible how much damage they can do in just a matter of minutes! hope the roof isn't too messed up.

Oh my gosh, can't believe the skylight at the school shattered! Sorry about your car. Are you guys going to get your roof inspected? We're thinking about getting it checked out just in case.

Oh yes, definitely getting the roof checked. We had the roof replaced on our old house when the hail was much smaller and lighter - it would be a miracle if the roof doesn't need to be replaced. Remember Omar if you do need a new roof - he can come to Austin!
